Welcome to our unique wilderness ecolodge

In the heart of the Moose Cree Homeland

Washow Lodge is located in northeast Ontario, Canada, in the James Bay Lowlands north of the Canadian Shield. This area has been our Homeland for thousands of years.

The lodge is situated near the mouth of the Harricanaw River which feeds into Hannah Bay, the southernmost bay of James Bay, at the southern tip of Hudson Bay. It is a one-hour boat ride to the Hannah Bay Bird Sanctuary. Closest communities are Moose Factory Island and Moosonee on the banks of the Moose River to the west, Cochrane, Ontario to the south, and Waskagenish, Quebec to the east.

Our vision is to carry forward the site's legacies and allow for a special meeting place once again.

A historical meeting place

The site of Washow Lodge has a long and significant history. It is an age-old meeting and gathering place in the traditional hunting and trapping territory of the Moose Cree First Nation.

In the 19th century, the site was a Hudson's Bay Company trading post. In 1947, it was the Hannah Bay Goose Camp of the Ontario Northland Railway. After ceasing operations there in 1992, the corporation transferred the camp to the Moose Cree First Nation, who built Washow Lodge to maintain an active stewardship presence in Hannah Bay.

Gateway to all of James Bay

Washow, Moosonee and Moose Factory provide a doorway to the isolated and unspoiled wilderness of northeastern Ontario. At the same time, these areas are accessible by rail (at relatively low effort and cost) from Cochrane and by air from Toronto and Timmins, Ontario. Getting to Washow Lodge.
